Useful Management Information

  • If you have a reason to suspect a child in Queensland is experiencing harm, or is at risk of experiencing harm, you need to contact Child Safety Services
  • Statement of intent – the prioritisation of health services for children and young people in the child protection system
  • Please direct paediatric scoliosis/kyphosis referrals to Queensland Children's Hospital, this condition is not treated at Gold Coast Health.

If your patient doesn't meet the minimum referral criteria

  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service.

Essential Referral Information

  • Clinical history and examination including key points:
    • evolution and duration of symptoms, if other diseases associated with scoliosis or neurological deficits
    • treatment prescribed
    • current and past medical history and medications
    • relevant family history associated with condition
  • X-ray upright thoracolumbar confirming scoliosis, including cobb angles
  • Confirmation of OOHC (where appropriate)

If a specific test result cannot be obtained due to access, financial, religious, cultural or consent reasons a clinical override may be requested. This reason must be clearly articulated in the body of the referral.
