Epiphora (watery eyes/blocked tear ducts)

Useful Management Information

  • Lacrimal sac massage technique taught to parents
  • Monitor watery eye for first 12 months
  • Please consider the following:
    • Is there accompanying photophobia?
    • Are one or both eyes enlarged?

Minimum Referral Criteria

Category 1
  • Children with watery eyes (epiphora) from birth with accompanying photophobia and one or both eyes are enlarged (horizontal corneal diameter >12.0mm)
Category 2
  • No category 2 criteria
Category 3
  • Children with epiphora from birth non resolved after 12 months with no other features

If your patient doesn't meet the minimum referral criteria

  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

If a specific test result cannot be obtained due to access, financial, religious, cultural or consent reasons a clinical override may be requested. This reason must be clearly articulated in the body of the referral.
