Minimum Referral Criteria

Category 1
  • Acute dermatoses (diagnosis in doubt)
  • Severe unstable dermatoses
  • Severe skin infections
  • Extensive inflammatory dermatoses
  • Dermatoses causing significant distress or preventing work
  • Examples include:
    • Severe drug eruptions
    • Severe acute contact dermatitis
    • Severe generalised (whole body) chronic eczema
    • Severe complicated psoriasis and dermatitis
    • Severe erythema nodosum, necrobiosis lipoidica, pyoderma gangrenosum
    • Severe cystic acne vulgaris not responding to treatment including nodulo-cystic acne
Category 2
  • Conditions likely to require more complex care if assessment is delayed
Category 3
  • Condition is unlikely to deteriorate quickly and unlikely to require more complex care if assessment is delayed

If your patient doesn't meet the minimum referral criteria

  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service.

Essential Referral Information

  • Clinical reason for referral
  • Duration of symptoms
  • Past medical history including duration and response to previous treatment
  • Current medication
  • Any relevant histopathology
  • Severity of the condition
  • Impact on quality of life
